Bathing Your Dog

A dog with healthy skin and fur shouldn’t need frequent bathing. In fact, too many baths can cause dry and flaky skin. A monthly bath, however, can help condition your dog’s coat and skin and minimize unpleasant odors.

Warm days are the best choice for outdoor baths. To bathe your dog outdoors, use a relatively shallow container, such as a child’s wading pool. In the winter, bathe your dog in a heated, closed bathroom and stand her in the bathtub.

When bathing your dog, always use warm, not hot, water. Keep soap and shampoo out of your dog’s eyes, ears, and mouth, and clean her face with a damp washcloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of soap and shampoo, which can cause fur to become dull and sticky. Dry your dog’s coat and skin by rubbing her briskly with a thick towel or chamois cloth. Avoid using an electric hair dryer, which can dry your dog’s fur and skin, and may burn her skin or hair. Avoid chilling your dog while bathing her.
